Google Local Services Ads UK: The 2026 Guide For Trade Businesses

There is a spot on Google that sits above the map pack, above the normal ads and above every organic result. Most UK tradesmen do not know it exists, and the ones who do often assume it is the same thing as Google Ads.

It is not. Local Services Ads are a separate product with a separate set of rules, and for a lot of trades they are the cheapest leads on the internet.

    1

What Local Services Ads actually are

Local Services Ads, or LSAs, show as a row of cards at the very top of the results page. Each card shows your business name, your star rating, your review count and a green tick that says Google Guaranteed.

Two things make them different from normal Google Ads.

First, you pay per lead, not per click. Someone clicking your ad and closing it straight away costs you nothing. You are charged when a customer calls you or messages you through the ad.

Second, there are no keywords, no ad copy and no landing pages. You do not write anything. Google matches your profile to searches based on the services you tick, your service area and your reviews. Setup is admin rather than marketing.

    2

    Can you actually get them

LSAs are live across the UK for most home service trades. Plumbers, electricians, roofers, locksmiths, heating engineers, cleaners and builders are all eligible in most areas. Availability changes by trade and by postcode, so check before you plan around it.

The quickest check takes ten seconds. Search your own trade plus your town on your phone. If you see a row of cards with green ticks at the top, LSAs are live in your area and your competitors are already in them.

    3

    Verification is the hard part

This is where most trade businesses fall over, and it is worth knowing before you start.

To get the Google Guaranteed badge you have to pass Google's checks. That means proving your business exists, showing public liability insurance at the level Google requires for your trade, and passing background checks. For some trades you will also need to show the relevant licence or certification.

Google has tightened what counts as proof of business. Utility bills are no longer accepted on their own. If you are a limited company, your Companies House registration covers it. If you are a sole trader without VAT registration, this is the bit to sort out first, because getting rejected at this stage is what stops most applications dead.

Get your paperwork together before you apply: proof of business registration, your insurance certificate with the correct cover level, and any trade certifications. Chasing documents halfway through the process is how people lose a month.

    4

    What it costs

You set a weekly budget based on how many leads you want. Google charges per lead, and the price per lead varies by trade and area. Emergency trades in cities cost more than general work in smaller towns.

The important number is not cost per lead, it is cost per booked job. A £25 lead you convert half the time is cheaper than a £12 lead you convert one time in ten.

You can dispute leads that are clearly junk: wrong service, wrong area, someone selling you something. Google credits genuine disputes back. Most businesses do not bother, and it is money left on the table. Check your leads weekly and dispute the rubbish ones.

    5

Why responsiveness matters more than budget

LSA ranking is not an auction in the way normal ads are. Google factors in your proximity to the searcher, your review score and volume, and how fast you respond to leads.

That last one catches people out. If you miss calls and let messages sit for hours, Google shows you less. The businesses at the top are not always the ones spending the most. They are the ones who pick up.

If you cannot answer the phone during the day, either set your hours honestly or get someone answering for you. Running LSAs while ignoring the leads is the worst of both worlds: you pay for them and you lose them.

    6

Should you run LSAs, Google Ads, or both

    They do different jobs.

LSAs catch the highest-intent searches in your category, where someone wants a plumber now and is choosing between three businesses with badges.

Normal Google Ads let you target specific services, products and areas that LSAs do not cover. Bathroom installation, commercial work, a specific brand of boiler, a town just outside your LSA area.

Most trades doing paid ads properly run both. If you only have budget for one, start with LSAs because the lead quality is higher and there is far less to get wrong. Our guide to Google Ads for tradesmen covers the other side.

    7

What LSAs will not do for you

They do not replace your Google Business Profile. The same reviews feed both, and a thin profile with four reviews will hold back your LSA ranking just like it holds back your map pack position. Get your profile sorted first.

They do not replace your website either. Plenty of people see your LSA card, then search your business name to check you out properly before they call. If there is nothing there, they call the next one. This is the same reason a Google Business Profile alone is not enough.

And they stop the day you stop paying, which is the same trade-off as any advertising. The SEO versus paid comparison is worth reading if you are deciding where the first £500 goes.

    8

    The short version

If LSAs are live for your trade in your area, they are usually the fastest route to leads you can control. Get your insurance and registration paperwork in order, answer the phone, keep your reviews coming, and dispute the junk leads.
